Erling Haaland misses opportunity to break Cristiano Ronaldo record

Ahead of the Wednesday Champions League crunch against Inter, Erling Haaland was on 99 goals in 103 matches for Man City. The Norwegian needed to score in the game to beat Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 100 goals in 105 matches for Real Madrid. However, should the record be broken, it will not have Haaland's name on it, as he failed to find the back of the net against Inter Milan, following a 0-0 draw between the two sides.  The Italian side were able to neutralise the City hitman with an impressive defensive display, which was also commended by Pep Guardiola. "There were six players around him," the head coach said. "Six. Three behind, three in front. That's how they kept him out of the game. That makes it difficult for any player. [Francesco] Acerbi, [Alessandro] Bastoni were five metres away from him, [Hakan] Calhanoglou, [Piotr] Zielinski in front of him. That's tough". The Spaniard further admitted that the 'Nerazzuri's approach, meant Haaland required more support upfront. "We tried to use the spaces, that's why [Ilkay] Gundogan had a couple of chances but Inter were stronger than us physically. We needed to get more players up alongside Erling and that's what we did. I knew that Inter would defend like that." Not all is lost though, as the striker still has the opportunity to match the Portuguese's record, if he manages to score in his next match on Sunday, which sees the crucial Premier League showdown between City and Arsenal.    September 18, 2024
